Jorge Lagos & Entizar Zalan.

FINCA SANTA TERESA, NICARAGUA

We met Jorge Lagos in 2013 at the local coffee mill in Neuva Segovia, outside the town of Ocotal. We were immediately impressed by his passion for coffee farming, and his knowledge of the subject quickly set him apart.

After studying at one of the most prestigious agricultural universities, Jorge took his knowledge and skills straight to the farm, applying new methods and techniques to deliver superior coffee. He was later joined by Entizar, his wife and business partner.

We have visited Jorge and Entizar many times – usually twice a year for the past 10 years. And recently they have been visiting us almost as often in NYC!

Together they employ over 60 laborers during harvest who pick and dry their coffee. The coffee is then sent to a dry mill where it is processed and then Jorge and Entizar export directly to Think Coffee.

Think Coffee has a direct relationship with Jorge, Entizar and a number of their farmworkers. We have verified that Jorge and Entizar pay a livable wage to both their full time and seasonal workers. We also have an ongoing Common Good Project with them to restore the homes of their farmworkers.

According to the “Living Wage Update Report: Northwest Nicaragua 2022” published by the Global Living Wage Coalition, the living wage standard was 9,815 cordoba or $276 monthly in 2022,
which was the standard in effect when the 2022-23 harvest started at Finca Santa Isabel.

86 FARMWORKER HOMES REFURBISHED.

Away from the farm, coffee laborers often live in difficult conditions, with leaky roofs, dirt floors, no front door, and no electricity or running water. Housing conditions are often unsanitary and unsafe, presenting health risks, especially to small children and the elderly.

The farmworker communities around Dipilto, Nicaragua are no different.
